Academic Teams & Competitions


All students in the STEM Academy are required to participate in the Lithia Springs High School Science & Engineering Fair and at least one additional academic competition EACH YEAR. Please note that membership, in and of itself, on an academic team does not satisfy this requirement - students must actually participate in a competition.

BETA: The National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. And for more than 80 years, it has prepared today's students to be tomorrow's leaders. Students who attend the annual BETA convention have opportunities to participate in a wide range of competitive events.

Chess Club: Lithia Spring High School Chess Club is an organization that is designed to teach and improve the students' mechanics of the classical board game-Chess.  The LSHS Chess Club participates in academic competition at the local and state level.  Besides advancing their game mechanics, students also benefit by improving creativity and problem solving, learning to use foresight and planning strategies, and optimizing their memory.

DECA: DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. There are multiple events throughout the year, so be sure to sign up ASAP (the competitions begin in November!).

Google Gravity Games: ​The Georgia Gravity Games is a gravity-only car race competition sponsored by Google, Georgia Tech and the City of Douglasville. The Georgia Gravity Games are an educational, hands-on activity designed to get young people excited about STEM subjects.

FBLA: FBLA-PBL's National Awards Program recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. Through state-based competition at the spring State Leadership Conferences, students compete in events testing their business knowledge and skills. Top state winners then are eligible to compete for honors at the National Leadership Conference each summer. STEM competitions include: Coding & Programming, Mobile Application Development, Computer Applications, AND MORE!

FCCLA: Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. Everyone is part of a family, and FCCLA is the only national Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.

FIRST Robotics Team:  After designing and building a robot, the team participates in several FIRST Robotics competitions in which their robot works in alliances with those of other teams to accumulate points.

HOSA: HOSA is a national student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA's goal is to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership. Competition opportunities abound for BMS students!

Literary Meet: At the Literary competition in March, students can compete in the following categories: (a) Oral Performance - Solo Dramatic, Solo Humorous and Duo (b) Essay - Personal, Argumentative and Rhetorical (c) Extemporaneous Speaking - Domestic and International (d) Boys Quartet (e) Solo - Boys and Girls (f) Girls Trio.

Mathematics Team: Students who have been invited as members or associates in Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honorary society (9 - 12 grades), may join the mathematics club.  This club has fun with math, and prepares students for local, state, and national competitions.

Mu Alpha Theta: A highly selective national honor society based upon superior student performance in mathematics. Members participate in competitions such as the Log 1 Contest, the Rocket City Math League, and the Mathematical Minutes Video Contest.

Technology Student Association (TSA): The Technology Student Association enhances personal development, leadership, and career opportunities in STEM, whereby members apply and integrate these concepts through intracurricular activities, competitions, and related programs. STEM contests include: Biotechnolgy Design, Coding, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Engineering Design, STEM Careers, Technology Bowl, Technology Problem Solving, AND MORE!

TOME Society Reading Competition:  The mission of Tome Student Literacy Society is to promote multiple literacies among 4th-12th grade students across the United States through: service; collaboration; competition-based club activities; and clean, entertaining, encouraging literature. Students who participate in Tome have the opportunity to participate in both individual and group competitions, such as Reading Bowl, attend TomeCon in the spring, and become a member of the Tau Omicron Mu Epsilon Honor Society as a junior or senior.

Scholar Bowl: "Scholar bowl is an academic competition in which two 5 person teams face off to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture.  Attended events include an annual tournament at Walton High School, a district-wide tournament with other Douglas County Schools, and occasionally an appearance on WSB-TV's High Q.  The season culminates with a match pitting the student team against a faculty team in the auditorium in April."

Science Olympiad:  Teams compete in events pertaining to scientific knowledge and practices in various science discipline, including biology, anatomy & physiology, forensics, chemistry, physics, and engineering.

SkillsUSA: Students compete in regional and state competitions as members of this student run program, designed to empower students to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible American citizens.
